Prepping for the Stock Shows: Youth & Ag in West Texas

At Peoples Bank, we understand the importance of agriculture in our region and the value of getting out children involved in stock shows. Agriculture is at the foundation of our heritage and the history of the families who made their homes in this area.

There’s also no denying the importance of livestock and agriculture shows in terms of educating consumers and their impact on the economy. Moreover, they play a vital role in helping young Texans gain life skills through livestock and agriculture projects, save money for college, and in developing a lifelong love and respect for agriculture – something that connects them back to West Texas. Our West Texas youth and ag share a tight bond.

With a New Year upon us, youth from Lorenzo, Lubbock, Nazareth, Shallowater, Slaton and Post – as well as our entire region – are busy with preparations for agriculture and livestock shows. It continues a tradition that dates nearly to the formation of communities – which was largely powered by farmers and ranchers.

Area youth will have the opportunity to participate in this month’s West Texas Fair & Rodeo and the Ft. Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. Next month, they’ll participate in the  San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo, the Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo and, of course, the State Fair of Texas in Dallas that begins on Sept. 29. A variety of other local and regional shows will be available, as well.

For many of today’s youth, agriculture is brought to their attention only through television or because of the food they see in grocery stores and restaurants. But agriculture remains the backbone of our country and the importance of educating youth about the correlation between local agriculture and our everyday lives is greater than ever.

The influence of youth agriculture and stock shows in West Texas (and in the communities listed above) is similarly important. Programs such as the 4-H and the Future Farmers of America continue to play a key role regarding how our region will help feed the world in the future.

Texas continues to have the largest youth livestock program in the U.S. with unmatched livestock participation and support from donors.

All of us at Peoples Bank understand agriculture and have a deep respect for everyone involved with it. We’ve made a long-term commitment to serving agriculture in our region. And our Agriculture-lending professionals have years of experience with farm, ranch, and livestock.

Take time to visit the stock shows in our area. We’ll see you there!
